X-Board Print (XBP)

X-Board
"Print" is a versatile, lightweight board, which offers designers and manufacturers a VOC-Free alternative to MDF, particle board and petrochemical-based foamed-core boards, typically used for building short-term displays and structures of all types.

X-Board's unique high-crush strength paper core is manufactured from post-consumer recycled paper and sugar cane waste. Sandwiched between top and bottom layers of semi-rigid printable paper optimised for industrial flatbed UV inkjet printers, X-Board is best disposed of in paper-recycling bins after use.

Panels can be UV inkjet printed directly or decorative laminates can be applied over the board. They can be mitre-cut, folded or curved, shape cut , canvas or fabric-wrapped, photo-mounted and fastened together with velcro, hot-melt adhesive or magnetic strips, generating an endless array of design possibilities.

For production runs, X-Board is best cut using a CNC router or flatbed digital cutting table with oscillating knife.  For simple straight-cutting for low volume hobby, DIY or set-building use, a heavy duty Stanley-type knife, panel saw, jigsaw or vertical foam trimmer may be used.

If one needs to hide the boards exposed kraft edges, X-Board can be double-mitre cut and folded back on itself, or one can easily apply a PVC C-channel edging with hot-melt glue gun which can be removed before recycling the board after its useful life.

xb_vnotched.jpgTypical applications for X-Board include:

  • Structural, flat-packed, point-of-purchase displays
  • Branded exhibition booth walls with matching promotional furniture
  • Branded industrial packaging requiring high crush-resistance
  • Art canvas frames
  • Printed bookshelves and funky office furniture
  • Custom-shaped standees
  • Custom printed coffins
  • Suspended bulkheads and retail hoardings
  • Podiums
  • In-store displays replacing MDF and particleboard
  • Printed pinboards

Description

A printable kraft-based, reinforced board with excellent stability and lay-flat properties for internal applications and short-term outdoor applications.

Product construction

Product consists of printable paper liner and inner kraft reinforced base. Specialised coatings and exceptional internal-fibre properties ensure optimum board stability.

Board thickness available:

5, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 32 and 40mm gauge sheets are available as stock lines. Other thicknesses on request. Note, not all thicknesses are stocked by each country distributor.

Board dimensions:

1220 x 1830mm
1220 x 2440mm
1220 x 2900mm
1220 x 3050mm
1220 x 3600mm

(NB. Custom lengths and special thicknesses are available on request through your local distributor)

Attributes

• Excellent printability with UV screen or inkjet printing equipment.

• Produced mostly from post-consumer recycled paper waste.

• No wax or polyethylene used in the manufacturing process, allowing the board to be easily repulped back into paper by recycling agents post-use.

• Excellent stability in indoor conditions

• Flame-resistant to international B3 standard (Class II rating is achievable and available on request for volume orders)

Manufacture and testing

X-Board is manufactured under stringent manufacturing process and quality control conditions. Product testing and development is conducted in accordance with international quality standards with the following quality certifications:

• ISO 9001
• OS 9000
• ISO 14001

The drag knife tool, fitted to a CNC cutting machine, drags through the board at 45 degrees in both directions to cut out a "V" shape, allowing the board to fold.

Here's an example of 16mm X-Board that's been direct UV inkjet printed, then both v-notch and contour-cut on a Zund CNC cutter.

This process allows for an endless array of boxes, shapes and structures to be created by designers, all of which can be fully recycled post-use.

Cut and pluck logos from the surface sheet of X-Board using a knife and hot-air gun.  Here's a double v-notch cut and a top paper layer cut and bend in one panel.

This example has been double v-notch cut, allowing the board to fold-back on itself to expose a printable front edge for say, retail shelving applications.
Once cut, as above, boards can be curved into shape.

Designers are encouraged to experiment with different depth cuts without removing the paper liner to achieve different shapes.

 Edging Techniques

X-Board edging can be left uncovered for an earthy look and feel, or one can apply a PVC edging shown opposite with hand-held hot-melt glue gun.

PVC edging available for 10mm and 16mm X-Board in colours white and black. Corporate colours can be matched for production runs of 2,500mtrs.

New on the market, is a great new edging machine from Drytac

Numerous woodgrain and other ABS edgings can now be applied to the edges of straight-panels of X-Board. The machine glues and trims in-line, much faster than manual application. Great for custom retail shelving and poster panels made from X-Board.
