X-Board used for loft furniture design project |
|
A class of second year industrial design students from the Cape Town University of Technology (CPUT), in South Africa, were recently given the task of designing and producing an item of furniture made from X-Board.
The assignment’s brief was to create a D.I.Y piece of furniture that was economical regarding utilisation and suitable for use in a smaller living area, such as a loft. The conceptualised goal was to be able to buy the “flat-packed” product and then assemble it at home.
The students rose to the challenge and chairs, shelves, bookcases, tables and various other designs were speedily created and assembled- all achieving their objective of being lightweight, easy to assemble, and maximising storage space by utilising a minimal area.
The project showcased the versatility of X-Board, in additional to its durability. Chairs created (with hidden shelves for additional storage) were strong enough to hold the weight of a fully grown man, yet were lightweight and able to be flat packed and tucked away beneath a bed, for example.
